It is home to some of the city’s most famous hotels, from historic grand dames to newer, more contemporary properties, and you are surrounded by beautiful shops, restaurants, galleries and some of London’s most iconic streets. But with so many excellent hotels to choose from, which one is right for you?

For me, there isn’t one β€œbest” hotel in Mayfair. They all have very different personalities, and the right choice depends on the kind of atmosphere you want from your London stay.

Here are some of my favourites.
‍

Claridge’s, Maybourne: the absolute classic

Claridge’s, Maybourne
is an absolute classic and one of London’s true hotel icons. It has that wonderful combination of elegance and energy. The interiors are beautiful and timeless, but the hotel never feels too formal or quiet. There is always a lively atmosphere, particularly around the hotel’s bars and dining spaces.

It is the kind of hotel where you can spend an afternoon having tea, meet someone for a drink in the evening or simply enjoy being surrounded by the energy of Mayfair.

I would choose Claridge’s for: someone who wants the classic Mayfair experience, beautiful interiors and a lively, glamorous atmosphere.

The Connaught: discreet, private and slightly mysterious

The Connaught, Maybourne has a very different personality. It is more discreet and private, with a darker and slightly more mysterious atmosphere. There is something almost secretive about it, which I think is part of its charm. It feels sophisticated without trying too hard and is particularly appealing to people who value privacy and understated luxury.

The food and beverage spaces are also a big part of the experience, making it a wonderful place to spend an evening.

I would choose The Connaught for: someone who prefers discreet luxury, privacy and a more intimate atmosphere.

The Beaumont: character, warmth and great value

The Beaumont, Mayfair is one of my favourite Mayfair hotels because it has something that many of the grander hotels don’t quite have: character.

It is generally more affordable than some of Mayfair’s most famous hotels, but I don’t think you are compromising on quality.

There is something very familiar and welcoming about The Beaumont. The Art Deco interiors, paintings and interesting details give it a real personality, while the staff are wonderfully friendly.

One of the things I particularly like are the five Mayfair Suites. Depending on the dates, they can sometimes be priced below a regular room at some of the more expensive Mayfair hotels, making them a fantastic option if you want more space.

The lobby and main restaurant and bar also have a lively atmosphere, and the hotel is popular with locals as well as hotel guests.

I would choose The Beaumont for: someone who wants a beautiful Mayfair hotel with personality, warmth and excellent value for the level of luxury.

The Dorchester: grand, glamorous and slightly Parisian

The Dorchester is another Mayfair legend. It feels wonderfully grand, with a slightly Parisian character that makes it stand out from some of the other traditional London hotels.Β

The rooms and suites have recently been renovated and now feel much lighter, with bright pastel colours and floral motifs, while still retaining the sense of classic luxury associated with The Dorchester. Its Park Lane location, overlooking Hyde Park, is another major attraction.

I would choose The Dorchester for: someone who loves grand hotels, classic glamour and a polished, elegant atmosphere.
‍

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair:Β for the modern traveller

If traditional grand hotels aren’t quite your style, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London offers something very different. It is modern, sleek and spacious, with a much cleaner aesthetic and less visual clutter. The hotel is particularly appealing to travellers who prefer contemporary luxury rather than traditional London interiors.

The hotel also has all the deluxe facilities you would expect from Mandarin Oriental, as well as a lovely rooftop bar with great views. It feels fresh and youthful while still offering the level of service and comfort you would expect from a luxury hotel.

I would choose Mandarin Oriental Mayfair for: someone who likes modern design, space and a more contemporary interpretation of luxury.

Brown’s: quintessentially British

Brown’s Hotel, a RoccoΒ Forte Hotel has a very special atmosphere. As London’s oldest luxury hotel, it has that wonderful British aristocratic aura that is difficult to recreate in a newer property. The rooms are cosy and elegant, and the whole hotel feels intimate and welcoming rather than imposing.

I also particularly love the breakfast here, especially the crab omelette.

And then there is the unique Paul Smith Suite, designed by the British designer himself. It gives the hotel another layer of British personality and makes it a particularly interesting choice for design and fashion lovers.

I would choose Brown’s for: someone who wants quintessentially British charm, history and a cosy luxury boutique atmosphere.

The Ritz London: a true legend

The Ritz London is another absolute London icon. There are few hotels in the city with quite the same sense of history and recognition. Even after the recent renovation of its rooms and suites, the hotel still manages to retain that wonderful historic atmosphere.

And, of course, there is afternoon tea. It remains one of the quintessential London experiences. Reservations can sometimes be difficult to secure, so this is something I recommend planning ahead for.

I would choose The Ritz for: someone who wants historic glamour, impeccable tradition and one of London’s most iconic hotel experiences.

‍

45 Park Lane: modern Mayfair and perfect for fitness lovers

45 Park Lane - Dorchester Collection has a more modern personality. The interiors combine dark wood with a contemporary feel, creating an atmosphere that is sophisticated but not overly formal.

What I particularly like about 45 Park Lane is its location directly opposite Hyde Park. For fitness-conscious travellers, this is a huge advantage. You can simply walk out of the hotel and be in Hyde Park, whether you want to go for a morning run, a long walk or some exercise during your stay. The hotel also has a beautiful spa and pool, which I think is one of the most impressive in London.

With just 45 rooms and suites, it also feels considerably more intimate than some of the grander Mayfair hotels. (dorchestercollection.com)

I would choose 45 Park Lane for: someone who wants contemporary luxury, privacy, excellent wellness facilities and easy access to Hyde Park.

‍

The Chancery Rosewood:Β Mayfair’s newest expression of luxury

The Chancery Rosewood brings a completely different energy to Mayfair. Opened in the former American Embassy on Grosvenor Square, it is one of the area’s newest luxury hotels and has a very contemporary feel. It is an all-suite hotel, with the design combining modern luxury with elements of the building’s history.

This is the hotel I would consider for someone who wants something new and different rather than another traditional London grand hotel.

It feels spacious, fresh and very much in tune with the latest direction of luxury hospitality.

I would choose The Chancery Rosewood for: someone who wants the newest, most contemporary Mayfair experience.

So, which Mayfair hotel is right for you?

This is what I love about Mayfair: you can find completely different interpretations of luxury within a very small area.

For classic glamour:
Claridge’s

‍For privacy and discretion: The Connaught

For character and great value:
The Beaumont

For grandeur:
The Dorchester

For contemporary luxury:
Mandarin Oriental Mayfair

For quintessential British charm:
Brown’s

For historic glamour:
The Ritz London

For fitness, wellness and a modern atmosphere:
45 Park Lane

For the newest expression of luxury:
The Chancery Rosewood

There really isn’t one hotel that is right for everyone. The best choice depends on your personality, your travel style and what you want your London stay to feel like.
